Family

Tetranychidae
Sub Family

Description

spider mites
Background to Family

Minute mites (length < 1mm) that occur on the undersides of leaves, on stems, and on shoots. They are well known for producing silken webbing, and they feed by piercing cells. Particular genera tend to be associated with either angiosperm (e.g. Bryobia) or gymnosperm hosts (Oligonychus), and with either trees and shrubs (Eotetranychus) or dicot and monocot herbs (Petrobia). Certain species are pests on a wide range of hosts in glasshouses or outside.
