Family

Chrysomelidae
Sub Family

Cryptocephalinae
Description

a sub-family of the Chrysomelidae
Background to Family

Twenty-four species, of which 20 occur in the main genus, Cryptocephalus. This includes many scarce species with poorly known life histories. Some develop in specific association with herbaceous plants, while others are linked to a range of broadleaved trees (especially birch, Betula; willows, Salix, and hazel, Corylus), where larvae feed on dead foliage and litter. Most records refer to adults feeding on foliage. The species of Clytra develop as case-bearing larvae in ants nests, where they consume fragments of vegetation.
