Sub Family

Description

squashbugs
Background to Family

Mainly fruit or seed feeders, overwintering as adults. Individual species of the two sub-families, Coreinae and Pseudophloeinae, generally choose hosts within single plant families (Fabaceae, Caryophyllaceae, Asteraceae, Polygonaceae). However, adults may feed on the seeds of numerous plants away from the normal host. Although named after certain pests of squash in North America, there are no pests in Great Britain; in fact, many species are uncommon, and associated with warm, dry habitats. The rare Gonocerus acuteangulatus was confined to box (Buxus) in Britain, but has since been found on a wider range of woody hosts- as is the case in continental Europe.
