Background to Family
Fifty-four species with varied life-histories, many are herbivorous. Larvae develop as miners or borers in flower-heads, leaves and stems. Hosts range from dicot and monocot herbs (e.g. Polygonaceae, Scrophulariaceae, Nymphaeaceae, Liliaceae) to sedges (Cyperaceae) and grasses (Poaceae).
