Family

Scarabaeidae
Sub Family

Description

scarab beetles or chafers
Background to Family

There are nearly 90 species in Great Britain, but the majority are associated with dung. The chafers (Melolonthinae) are either detritivores associated with wood decay or root feeders; many are scarce. Like the Lucanidae, larvae take several years to complete development. Root feeders may be polyphagous, and their are numerous economic pests of turf and cereals. Adult chafers feed on plant foliage or at flowers.
